HBADE Sporting Clays’ Mixer Reminder – Deadline Approaching

Registration ends next Friday for our first annual Sport Shooting Clay Mixer!

Make a weekend of it, this event is Friday May 9, 2014 at Owen’s Station in Greenwood, Delaware. The event runs from 9am and will last until about 3pm including lunch. This event is hosted by a partnership between our Associates Council and Green Building Council.

Although residential sprinklers have not been mandated in 2 of 3 Counties thus far, our Premier Sponsor Weyerhaeuser will be presenting their Trus Joist brand engineered lumber products including their latest innovation, TJI® joists with Flak Jacket® protection. Flak Jacket® protection is a proprietary, patent-pending coating that enhances the fire resistance of TJI Joists and enables them to meet both single and multi-family fire protection code requirements. Flak Jacket protection helps solve the challenge of shifting code requirements while providing all the quality and cost-efficiency you expect of Trus Joist engineered lumber products.   (Possibly for use in crawl space areas).

If you can’t make the entire event, a lunch only options has been added.

Registration Deadline is next Friday.  More information and registration is here:

Thanks, hope to see you at Owens Station on May 9, 2014

HBADE Picking Up More Read Aloud Volunteers – how about you?

HBADE has selected Read Aloud Delaware as our Volunteer Program.  The Associates Council spearheaded this community service initiative and the Board of Directors recently voted to approve it.  A great cause.  You will be hearing more about this from us in the near future.

In an effort to “pay it forward”, HBADE would like to ask members, staff of members, spouses, or anyone with an interest to volunteer to read to children in their school for about an hour a week or a month, or whatever you can do.  Jacki McCulley has been reading for some time now and finds it very rewarding that the children she reads to are greatly appreciative.

readaloud

The need for this program is very disturbing. Did you know 1 in every 6 adults has less than an 8th grade education.  And that each year approximately 2,000 students drop out of high school.  And that over 80% of childcare centers serving low-income children lack age-appropriate books and other print materials.  These children need a better start to improve their chance of success in later life.  And today’s children are our future.

Visit readalouddelaware.org and complete an application. Reading opportunities exist statewide. Then you will need to be fingerprinted and background check (they are very careful about the safety for the children).  Then you attend a one-hour “orientation/training” session. This is a very simple process.  I just completed the “training” and will be reading soon to some young kids in a school.

Helping a child become a better reader is so rewarding, and allowing a child to read to an adult is a wonderful way to work on those reading skills.

Please consider offering a small amount of your time, it will make such a difference!

HBADE Butch Alfieri Associate of the Year April 2014 Nomination –

Yesterday afternoon our Board of Directors met, and nominated 3 Associate Members for consideration for 2014 Butch Alfieri Associate of the Year.

John Tracey, a partner at the law firm Young Conaway Stargatt and Taylor was nominated for his help and support at last month’s Bringing Housing Home meeting with Senator Carper, Senator Coons and Representative Carney.  John’s firm hosted our meeting in their multipurpose conference room at their Rodney Square office in Wilmington, which was a perfect location for our federal delegation as their offices are close by.  It was an important meeting for us as we have previously written about in Sticks and Bricks and our venue at YCST on Rodney Square for quite fitting!

Jim McCulley of Watershed Eco LLC was nominated in recognition of his work on the State’s Wetlands Advisory Committee. As our representative on this committee, Jim has made sure our interests are well respected and also very importantly he is crafting a proposal to allow density bonuses to landowners in exchange for protection of site natural resources.  Doesn’t it make sense – instead of devaluing a resource and a landowner’s land, this would encourage greater protection of natural resources such as wetlands, habitat and critters and forested areas.

Mike Riemann of Becker Morgan Group was nominated for his help allowing us to communicate and participate with Kent County government and building officials on numerous issues during the last 18 months.  Most recently, Kent County adopted the latest building code (IRC 2012) exempting residential sprinklers in new homes.  Mike’s efforts to help us meet and develop working relationships with Kent County officials was critical to our participation in their public meetings and dialogue during this process.

Congratulations to John Tracey, Jim McCulley and Mike Riemann, and thank you for helping our Association and the housing interests of our entire membership!

More Good News for Member Debra Young!

The 2014 NAHB Remodelers Chairman Paul Sullivan and his leadership team extended an invitation to HBADE member Debra Young, owner of EmpowerAbility LLC,  to serve as a consultant governor on the 2014 NAHB Remodelers CAPS Board of Governors.

Even though Young did not formally apply to serve on this board, Debra has been active with the CAPS Board of Governors over the last few years and the leadership felt she would be a valuable contributor to the group.
