A Look at the New James C. McCulley Plaque

Home Builders Association of Delaware, wanted to share the newly engraved James C. McCulley Associate of the Year Award plaque, and Congratulate Jim once again! As you may recall, our Executive Committee secretly voted to rename our top Associate award and announce at the 2015 Leadership & Legacy Ball.  The award is now the James C. McCulley Associate of the Year Award in recognition of Jim’s tireless and longstanding service to our Association.  Jim had served as our first Associate Vice President, Chair of our Associates Council, and as a national director representing Delaware at the National Association of Home Builders Board of Directors.

Associate of the Year Award Renamed

December 12, 2015

The Home Builders Association of Delaware renamed the Butch Alfieri Associate of the Year Award the James C. McCulley Associate of the Year Award
The Associate of the Year award was renamed at the Annual Banquet on Saturday night at the Queen Theater in Wilmington.  The first James C. McCulley Associate of the Year Award was presented to Debra Young of Empowerability.

The Associate of the Year (AOTY) Award is given once a year to a non-builder member of the Home Builders Association of Delaware (HBADE).  The award was first given in 1989 to Mauro “Butch” Alfieri and the award was subsequently named after him through 2014.  This year the HBADE Board of Directors voted to rename the award after Jim McCulley a recipient in 2006 and 2011.  Going forward the name of the yearly award will be the James C. McCulley Associate of the Year Award.

Jim has been a member of HBADE since 1988 and was the first Associate Vice President and is now a Life DIrector.  Jim also serves on the Board of the National Association of Homebuilders.

“This is an incredible honor to be recognized by this great Association.  I will continue to work hard for all of the Associate Members.  This year we had the largest list of nominees for this award and it is encouraging to see so many Associates actively involved in the Association.  Thank you to the Board of Directors and all of the people who helped me along the way.”

HONORS at the Home Builders Leadership and Legacy Ball December 12th

We had a great time at our Ball last Saturday night, not only honoring and recognizing our members’ accomplishments, but also in a unique and tremendous venue, World Café Live at the Queen in Wilmington.

The Queen is a historic structure, beginning as a hotel in 1789. It transformed into a movie theatre in 1916.  Fast forward, it reopened in 2011 as World Café Live at the Queen, after a year of renovations.  We’ve since heard nothing but compliments from attendees, especially because of its state of the art audio visual equipment.  The acoustics are tremendous.

The World Café made for the perfect backdrop for our program – installation of our 2016 President, recognizing our 2016 Board of Directors, and announcing this year’s Award recipients. Pictures from the evening are posted on our website.

Kevin Whittaker was installed as our 2016 President, continuing a new term as President. Kevin was also awarded our highest honor, as the 2015 Leon N. Weiner Builder of the Year, in recognition of his many accomplishments overseeing the Board, participating at legislative events and generally piloting our membership and activities.

A surprise this year, our Executive Committee secretly voted to rename our top Associate award and announce at the Ball. Announced by last year’s Associate of the Year recipient Jeff Haggerty, the award is now the James C. McCulley Associate of the Year Award in recognition of Jim’s tireless and longstanding service to our Association.  Jim had served as our first Associate Vice President, Chair of our Associates Council, and as a national director representing Delaware at the National Association of Home Builders Board of Directors.

While Jim was quite surprised when Jeff announced the renaming of the award, Jim continued on and announced Debra Young as the first recipient of the James C. McCulley Associate of the Year Award.  Debra won this honor by secret vote taken by the builder Board members.  While there were many qualified nominees, Debra was recognized for her work as the current Associate Vice President, Chair of the Associates Council, and for her Association participation including as a guest lecturer at our events and at the International Builder Show.

Congratulations to all!

Farewell Bruce Stanley

Bruce Stanley, a member of the Home Builders Association of Delaware, died Wednesday evening.

Together with his wife Carolyn, Bruce owned Stanley Builders and they built single family homes and townhomes in the Newark, Middletown, Pike Creek and other parts of New Castle County.

I became acquainted with Bruce in the mid 1980’s when I began my first tenure with Home Builders around 1985 as he was a builder member on our Board of Directors and later became President in 1989.  Bruce was active in many committees including our Golf Committee and he was one of our members that initiated our Louis Capano Sr. Memorial Golf Outings.

Bruce’s accomplishments in construction and service to our industry were recognized by his peers, winning the Leon N Weiner Builder of the Year Award in 2007.

Bruce also served Delaware in the capacity as a National Director on the Board of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)

Bruce was also a pilot and I once flew with him to Washington for meetings held at NAHB headquarters. It was the first time I sat up front in the “co-pilot” seat of a small plane and it was quite an experience but Bruce was completely in control.

Bruce is survived by his wife Carolyn, and his children and grandchildren. A service will be held Sunday December 13, 2015 at the MOT Senior Center in Middletown.

Farewell Bruce, you will be missed.
