Thursday Final Day at International Builders Show
Today bring a closing to the intense activity filled trip that is IBS. Loads of classes, new exhibits, meeting new friends and prospects while reconnecting with the familiar faces we only see each year.
Today the annual meeting of the NAHB Board of Directors met. Nearly 600 Board members rose early and arrived for the meeting this morning which runs from 8am till 2pm. Delaware members on the Board include Kevin Kelly, Steve Bomberger, Jim McCulley, Bob Thornton, Debra Young, and Jeff Haggerty. We heard many informative reports, including that the final attendance tally at IBS is expected to number 110,000 people!
Thursday brings the official closing of IBS, capped off with the 2016 Spike Concert which features Darryl Hall and John Oates. The Spike party is the NAHB thank you to members that have recruited and brought in new members over the past year to their local home builder associations. Tickets are complimentary to eligible spikes, while other attendees can buy tickets at $40.
Many of our Delaware members that have attended IBS will be returning home Thursday or Friday. Of course we here are all watching the latest weather forecasts for the impact of weather storm Jonas, and how it will affect flights into Baltimore and Philadelphia. See you all next week in Delaware!
Education Opportunities Wednesday at the International Builders Show
Formal and informal educational opportunities abound at IBS for every aspect related to the home building industry.
Informally, exhibitors are eager to talk to attendees and educate them as they explain their products. In addition, there are lots of classes available on numerous aspects. The below is a chart of all the different courses and topics available.
One class is being taught by Delaware HBA member Debra Young. Her session “Think Your Buyers Are Too Young for Universal Design” ran first thing this morning.
Amongst the exhibitors the Home Innovations Research Labs had a booth display of their new ngbs.com website to launch their new consumer oriented green home certification website.
Closing out the day, HBADE held a gathering reception at the Lago Nightclub and Restuarant at the Bellagio. We had a great time unwinding after a long day of classes, meetings, walking the exhibits at the Show floor. Lago is right on the main floor as the Bellagio filled up with other IBS attendees, gamblers, and tourists crowded onto the main floor. Our picture shows only a very small part of our reception attendees!

Wanted: Builders, Architects, Designers, Artists and Creative DIY-ers! Faithful Friends Animal Society is excited to announce Barkitecture is returning on Saturday, March 19, 2016. This event raises funds and support for the shelter by auctioning off custom-made dog houses, cat condos, and pet furniture.
Join the Design/Build competition and create a piece to be auctioned during this meaningful (and fun!) event. By participating, you will be helping the animals in our community and promoting your business! Last year we hosted a sold-out crowd for the second year in a row and raised over $90,000 for pets in need.
A creative entry from you to add to our Design/Build Competition will help us produce a one-of-a-kind experience for our guests and raise those critical funds to save more homeless and neglected pets in Delaware. International Builders Show Opening Ceremonies Day Tuesday 1/19/16
Tuesday was the official opening of the International Builders Show, the day when all of the educational sessions begin, and when the exhibition halls open to nearly a million square feet of product displays and demonstrations.
The day began with opening ceremonies. After some brief opening comments and a show by Rhythm Extreme, the crowd enjoyed the premiere headline act by Jay Leno. For those who remember his late night show, it was just like his monologue of jokes, except he performed for 20 minutes. Lots of great jokes, a real treat.
Then the halls filled with attendees checking out all the new products. Everyone agreed the crowds were much larger than previous years, surely the exhibitors were happy.
During the day, one presentation was an economic presentation by NAHB’s chief economist, Dr. David Crowe. He was joined by two other economists in an informal setting that had a great deal of q&a with the audience. The good news from them is that the housing market is improving and new housing starts are expected to increase by 13-15% in 2016. Note that anyone that would like a copy of Dr. Crowe’s pdf slides can obtain a copy at email@example.com.
MONDAY January 18th finds more attendees arriving but the exhibitors are still busy building and putting the finishing touches on their displays. Opening session is tomorrow, Tuesday morning.
The standard hallmark of IBS is the carving of the large stack of 2 by 4 wood studs, which greets IBS attendees.
The curriculum for educational sessions has been laid out. Dozens of different classes or forums for all aspects of home building – land development, sales and marketing, you name it.
Meeting sessions continued today.
Tomorrow, opening ceremonies with Jay Leno.
SUNDAY Reports this week from Las Vegas, where I am attending the International Builder Show January 18 thru 22nd. I landed in Las Vegas Sunday to sunny and pleasant temperatures – in contrast to the snow that hit Delaware.
Early arrivers have mostly come to attend meetings, while all the exhibitors are setting up and constructing their displays. A local cabbie told me that IBS is one of a series of shows and conventions all happening in Vegas in January. While IBS will bring in likely 75,000 people, the cabbie said there is a total expected audience of 250,000 people.
I will be filing reports on a daily basis. As you can see below, there is a lot of work still to do.
