Attention Homebuilder Members:
In this morning’s Wilmington News Journal there is a Letter to Editor regarding new requirements surrounding residential fire sprinklers in Delaware. We are sending this eblast to make sure you know we are aware of the requirement and will keep you posted before the provisions embodied in the law takes effect.
This law, to mandate that builders offer residential sprinklers as an option to new home buyers, was enacted last summer (2015) by the Delaware General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Markell. (There are other details regarding the mandate that you should be aware of. Use the link below to review the requirements which are detailed in the sprinkler legislation HB 133.)
As we reported to all members last summer, builders will be required by this law to price and provide the option, and install the sprinklers if the buyer chooses and pays for the sprinklers. As a prerequisite to the law taking effect, the State Fire Marshal is required to prepare a consumer booklet detailing sprinklers before the law takes effect.
We met with the Fire Marshal last Fall and spoke with him again last week. The booklet preparation is underway and we expect to hear more soon.
We will keep you apprised as documents and further information become available.
A copy of the final sprinkler option legislation which lists the specific requirements (HB 133) can be found here:
