NAHB reached out to our Republican and Democratic presidential candidates to see where each stands on the issues that are most important to our members and to the industry. Where the candidates did not supply a response, we looked for instances where the candidate has spoken on the matter in speeches or other presentations.


Housing Affordability

No official campaign position.

• Help responsible working families by matching up to $10,000 in savings towards a down payment on a first home and support counseling programs for the significant financial commitment of homeownership.

• Clarify the rules of the road to expand access to home loans, defend the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and enforce fair housing and lending laws.

• Connect housing support in high-poverty neighborhoods to economic opportunity and revitalize communities being dragged down by physical decay.

• Issue a temporary moratorium on new regulations to give our American companies the certainty they need to reinvest in our community, start hiring again, and expanding businesses. We will no longer regulate our companies and our jobs out of existence.

• Cancel immediately all illegal and overreaching executive orders and our most intrusive regulations, like the Waters of The U.S. rule.

• Eliminate burdensome regulations that are not necessary, do not improve public safety, needlessly kill jobs, and increase the size of our already bloated government after a thorough agency review.

• Immediately invest $20 billion in school choice by reprioritizing existing federal dollars. Let states allow these funds to follow the student to the public or private school they attend. If the states collectively contribute another $110 billion from their own education budgets toward school choice, that could provide $12,000 in funds to the 11 million K-12 students who today live in poverty.

• Work with Congress on reforms to ensure universities are making a good-faith effort to reduce the cost of college and student debt in exchange for federal tax breaks and tax dollars.

• Ensure that the opportunity to attend a two- or four-year college, or to pursue a trade or a skill set through vocational and technical education, will be easier to access, pay for and finish.

• Launch a national campaign to modernize and elevate the profession of teaching.

• Provide every student in America an opportunity to learn computer science.

• Provide $2 billion of support to school districts to improve school climates and reform school discipline practices to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline.

• Introduce comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to full and equal citizenship.

• End the three-year and 10-year bars and defend President Obama’s executive actions—known as DACA and DAPA—against partisan attacks.

• Promote naturalization by expanding fee waivers to alleviate costs, increase access to language programs to encourage English proficiency, and increase outreach and education to help more people navigate the process.

• Create a National Office of Immigrant Affairs, support affordable integration services through $15 million in new grant funding for community navigators and similar organizations, and significantly increase federal resources for adult English language education and citizenship education.

• Promote a system that serves the well-being of the American people, keeps immigration levels within historical norms and selects immigrants based on their likelihood of success and ability to be financially self-sufficient.

• Triple the number of ICE agents. Establish new immigration controls to boost wages and to ensure that open jobs are offered to American workers first. Begin by constructing an impenetrable physical wall on the southern border, on Day 1. Mexico will pay for the wall.

• Ensure that anyone who illegally crosses the border is detained until they are deported. Ensure that other countries take their people back when we order them deported.

• Deport criminal aliens on Day 1, in joint operations with local, state and federal law enforcement, end sanctuary cities, immediately terminate President Obama’s two illegal executive amnesties and ensure that a biometric entry-exit visa tracking system is fully implemented at all land, air, and sea ports.

Tax Plan


• Reduce taxes across the board, especially for working and middle-income Americans. Ensure the rich pay their fair share, but no one pays so much that it destroys jobs or undermines our ability to compete.

• Eliminate special interest loopholes, make our business tax rate more competitive to keep jobs in America, create new opportunities and revitalize our economy.

• Reduce the cost of childcare by allowing families to fully deduct the average cost of childcare from their taxes, including stay-at-home parents.

• Restore basic fairness to our tax code by implementing a “fair-share surcharge” on multi-millionaires and billionaires and fight for measures like the Buffett Rule to ensure the wealthiest Americans do not pay a lower tax rate than hardworking middle-class families.

• Close corporate and Wall Street tax loopholes and invest in America in a fiscally responsible way.

• Simplify and cut taxes for small businesses so they can hire and grow.

Workforce Development


• Invest $20 billion to support millions of youth jobs, direct federal funding for local programs to put our kids to work. Invest $5 billion in reentry programs for formerly incarcerated people.

• Invest $25 billion to support entrepreneurship and small-business growth in underserved communities.

• Expand job training and apprenticeships, make government a more effective partner with workers, labor, employers and training providers to prepare workers for good jobs and encourage employers to invest in their workers for the long term.

No official campaign position, but Trump said he would create 25 million new jobs and grow the economy at an annual rate of at least 3.5%. Describing his plan in a speech before the Economic Club of New York as “the most pro-growth, pro-jobs, pro-family plan put forth perhaps in the history of our country,” the plan includes reductions in non-defense spending, lower taxes and penalties for companies that move overseas.


• Make America energy independent, create millions of new jobs, and protect clean air and clean water.

• Declare American energy dominance a strategic economic and foreign policy goal. Unleash America’s $50 trillion in untapped shale, oil and natural gas reserves, plus hundreds of years in clean coal reserves. Open onshore and offshore leasing on federal lands, eliminate moratorium on coal leasing, and open shale energy deposits.

• Encourage the use of natural gas and other American energy resources that will both reduce emissions but also reduce the price of energy and increase our economic output. Reduce and eliminate all barriers to responsible energy production.

• Generate enough renewable energy to power every home, with half a billion solar panels installed by 2020. Cut energy waste and reduce American oil consumption by a third through cleaner fuels and more efficient cars, boilers, ships and trucks.

• Defend, implement and extend smart pollution and efficiency standards, including the Clean Power Plan and standards for cars, trucks and appliances that clean our air, save families money and fight climate change.

• Launch a $60 billion Clean Energy Challenge to cut carbon pollution and expand clean energy, including for low-income families. Invest in clean energy infrastructure, innovation, manufacturing and workforce development to make the economy more competitive and create good-paying jobs and careers.

• Ensure safe and responsible energy production: Reform leasing and expand clean energy production on public lands and waters tenfold within a decade, cut the billions of wasteful tax subsidies for oil and gas companies and invest in clean energy, and cut methane emissions and put in place strong standards for reducing leaks from both new and existing sources.

• Revitalize coal communities by supporting locally driven priorities and make them an engine of U.S. economic growth in the 21st century.

Health Care


• Defend and expand the Affordable Care Act, which covers 20 million people. Expand access to affordable health care to rural Americans and families regardless of immigration status. Fight for health insurance for the lowest-income Americans in every state by incentivizing states to expand Medicaid.

• Bring down out-of-pocket costs like copays and deductibles. Reduce the cost of prescription drugs and protect consumers from unjustified prescription drug price increases.

• Defend access to reproductive health care.

• Double funding for community health centers and support the healthcare workforce.

• Repeal and replace Obamacare with Health Savings Accounts. Work with Congress to create a patient-centered health care system that promotes choice, quality and affordability.

• Work with states to establish high-risk pools to ensure access to coverage for individuals who have not maintained continuous coverage. Allow people to purchase insurance across state lines, in all 50 states, creating a dynamic market.

• Maximize flexibility for states via block grants so that local leaders can design innovative Medicaid programs that will more appropriately serve their low-income citizens.

Housing Finance, Mortgage Interest Deduction

Consider Teaching as an Instructor Licensee

Because we want to continue providing NAHB members with as much access as possible to in-person designation education courses, NAHB recently launched its Instructor Licensee program.

The program supplements existing designation course offerings across the country, particularly in areas where HBAs are not providing those education services, by allowing NAHB instructors to purchase their own education licenses and deliver courses they’re pre-approved to teach.

The Instructor Licensee program gives understaffed and overstretched state and local HBAs the option to offer these professional development programs to members without committing to a license.

During the recession, many state and local associations downsized their staffs and redirected both priorities and money toward other activities and programs.

Since then, NAHB has seen a steep decline in the number of education licenses purchased by HBAs, which has created access gaps across the country. Many members who were either interested in starting or finishing designation courses have not been able to do so easily.

The new Instructor Licensee program addresses this problem by creating access points through individual instructors across the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii) and internationally, as requests arise.

Today,  32 states have at least one state or local HBA education license. That means there are still 18 states without local access to designation courses.

NAHB is actively looking for more instructors. Participation in the Instructor Licensee program is open to current, approved instructors who are willing to support and connect with local HBAs that are not currently offering designation courses.

IMPORTANT! Please take a moment to read the following and then take the survey to provide feedback/thoughts to Kent County in updating their Comprehensive Plan. 

Kent County officials are beginning the process of updating the Kent County Comprehensive Plan.  A significant part of this process is collecting feedback from the public to evaluate current conditions in the county.

If you have a free moment, please take their survey (see link below). Feedback will aid their development of goals to include for the future of Kent County. The survey is comprised of 34 questions touching on various topics such as land use, transportation, the environment, economic development, etc.

There will be more information coming as they continue to work on the 2018 Comprehensive Plan, so stay tuned!

2016 Fall Golf & Crab Feast Huge Success

The 2016 Fall Golf & Crab Feast was held October 6th at the Odessa National Golf Club. There were 127 golfers and an additional 73 people who came to enjoy the crab feast making a grand total of 200. The weather cooperated making it a beautiful golf day. The day began with a few words from Jeff Haggerty and off everyone went.




Some golfers took a break to eat their boxed lunches along with Dee Cairo’s special water ice treats.


After golf, everyone headed to the tent for a delicious crab and steak feast.


A few words were spoken by Randy Noel, MIRM, CGB, CMP, NAHB’s SecondVice Chairman of the Board. He is a Louisiana-based custom builder, founding Reve Inc., with over 30 years of experience in the residential construction industry.


It was then time for awards. We had our first place team. Congratulations!


The awards ended with our Toilet Bowl Trophy winning team!


We hope everyone had a great time and we look forward to seeing you all at our next event!
