The Home Builders Association of Delaware’s 2016 Leadership and Legacy Ball was held last weekend, December 10th, at The Clubhouse at Baywood Greens. It was a great night spent honoring our many volunteers and spending time with our family, friends, and colleagues.
The evening began with a cocktail reception. As the cocktail hour wound down, the Cape Henlopen High School Drumline came into the room playing a cadence to get everyone’s attention. Everyone was then asked to be seated, while the crowd was entertained with several musical pieces by the drumline. It was a very unique way of starting the program and everyone enjoyed it.
The Dover Air Force Base Honor Guard then came in with the American and Delaware Flags looking very impressive. As the crowd stood, Strangers’ singer sang an amazing rendition of The Star Spangled Banner and no one “took a knee”.
Howard Fortunato, HBA/DE Executive Vice President, welcomed everyone and got the program started by recognizing our dignitaries, Senate Pro Tem Dave McBride and his wife Margret, Representative Ruth Briggs King and her husband Stan, Representative Mike Ramone and his wife Lisa, Sussex Councilman Rob Arlett and his wife Lorna, and DSHA Secretary Anas Ben Addi and his wife Tamara.
Debra Young, last years Associate of the Year recipient, came forward to award the 2016 James C. McCulley Associate of the Year award to Michael Easton of Horty and Horty. Kevin Whittaker, last years Builder of the Year, came forward to award the 2016 Leon N. Weiner Builder of the Year Award to Mary Field of Regal Builders/Noble’s Pond. It was great to see their surprise and appreciation.
After enjoying dinner, Howard continued with the program by recognizing our past Presidents and Life Directors which require many hours of service and effort for our industry.
The 2017 Board of Directors were then recognized.
Kevin Kelly, President of Leon Weiner & Associates and Past Chair of N.A.H.B., came forward to install Jim McCulley as the new 2017 HBA/DE President. It was an exciting and memorable moment. Jim is the first Associate Member to be our President.
Jim said a few words outlining his agenda for 2017, followed by calling up Kevin Whittaker thanking him for his many years of service as President for an unprecedented 3 years and presenting him with The President’s Distinguished Service Award and a ceremonial gavel.
The program was over. The band, Strangers, took over for the rest of the evening. The dance floor remained crowded for the rest of the night, while some chose to go on the back deck to enjoy a cigar.
Thank you to everyone who brought in donations for our selected charity this year, the USO. We collected food items, monetary donations, and gift cards.
